Sexceptional Lecture: 31 Flavors of Non-Monogamy with Dr. David Ley

Consensual NonMonogamy is the fastest growing relationship trend of the new millennium. Young people are embracing relationships that reject socially-mandated monogamy. Older generations which have lived nonmonogamously for decades are coming out of the closet about their lives and loves. The options are many and varied. Success in these new relationship styles requires self-awareness and personal skills. But how do you know which relationship style you’re best suited for? Which flavor of love and sex will best fit your palate, and work for your relationship? Dr. David Ley is an internationally-recognized expert on sexuality, and particularly on translating modern sexuality in a non-shaming way. In this novel, never-before-presented discussion, he explores how people can successfully and healthily navigate the growing ranges of relationship options.

Dr. David J. Ley is an internationally-recognized expert on issues related to sexuality, pornography and mental health. He has appeared on television with Anderson Cooper, Katie Couric, Dr. Phil and others.

Confronting Monogamy Ideals Embedded in Psychotherapy: Some research has found that as many as 70% of licensed therapists view nonmonogamy as “unworkable” or “unrealistic.” Modern attachment theorists view Consensual Nonmonogamy (CNM) as emerging from deficient or disturbed relationships and early childhood experiences. However, CNM is becoming far more common, and unprepared therapists are encountering it in therapy far more frequently. This training helps therapists to examine their own biases about relationship, love and sex, and explores ways to address CNM in a non-judgmental, non-shaming manner.

  • Participants will learn to confront and challenge their own unexamined biases about relationship styles and sexuality;
  • Therapists will gain skills to be able to understand and assist different types of CNM relationships;
  • Therapists will learn to help individuals and couples gain self-awareness into the personal and relational characteristics which predict disposition to different types of CNM and success therein

CNM Case Presentations: Group will explore a variety of different case presentations, offered by the presenter, and by group participants. Participants will discuss assessment, treatment and intervention techniques appropriate to different types of CNM and different couples, based on the individual and relational characteristics. Group will discuss: Swinger couples; Cuckold couples; Polyamorous couples; Polyamorous Triads/Groups; Solo Polyamorists; DADT/Open couples; other. (2 hours)

  • Participants will gain exposure to different types of CNM therapy cases;
  • Participants will develop case presentation and treatment formulation skills;
  • Group will explore and share varied intervention and therapy techniques
