BARCELONA STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM: September 22ND - 26TH, 2025

WHAT TO EXPECT?

We're excited to announce that our Study Abroad program is heading to Barcelona for the first time! Barcelona's lively culture and openness make it a fantastic place to dive into sexuality education.

Join Dr. Justin Lehmiller, a Harvard Award-winning educator, for a fun and transformative experience filled with educational excursions and local insights. Don’t miss out on this unique opportunity to explore in one of Europe’s most vibrant cities!

Course Description

Spain is one of the largest capitals for sex work on the globe. Sex work has been decriminalized here since 1995. It is also one of the most socially progressive societies, becoming the first largely Catholic nation to legalize same-sex marriage back in 2005 (a full ten years before the United States). Spain is at the forefront of LGBTQ+ rights, where they are amongst the highest in the world. Barcelona in particular is regarded as one of the most LGBTQ+ friendly cities anywhere. The country is also home to a large and burgeoning industry of ethical pornography, including bases of operation for Erika Lust and Paulita Pappell.

  • This course offers a comparative analysis of sexual attitudes and behaviors in Spain and the United States. Spain provides a unique contrast with its progressive and open sexual culture, being one of the most LGBTQ-friendly countries in the world and home to a burgeoning ethical porn industry. We will explore these aspects and their implications. Students will also delve into LGBTQ issues in Spain and experience Barcelona's culture to broaden their global perspective.

  • Course fee is $1597 (plus fees) per student for registration.

    • It includes:
All lectures/workshops with Dr. Justin Lehmiller

    • All events with guest speakers

    • All cultural excursions and adventures

  • Students are responsible for their own transportation, hotel accommodations, and meals during the program. Barcelona's public transportation system is excellent, allowing students to choose accommodations further from the city center to reduce costs. We will facilitate the option for students to pair up and share rooms to further minimize expenses as the program date approaches.

It is essential for students to book their own flights and hotel accommodations, aiming to arrive in Barcelona no later than early-afternoon on September 22nd, with activities commencing at 4:00 PM that day. For departures, students should plan to leave on September 26th or later.

Additionally, feel free to extend your stay in Barcelona before or after the course as desired. We will provide a comprehensive list of optional activities for those who want to explore more of the city. Please note that all fees are non-refundable, though they can be transferred between SHA students, programs, and events. Some activities may change depending on availability.

  • We will stay in the city center of Barcelona to be close to most of our activities for the week. We will meet at a central hotel most days, and many students will also choose to stay at that same hotel. We will provide the hotel's details and address soon after you reserve your spot. Please note, you can book accommodations anywhere you prefer—the options we send are only suggestions and our meeting point.

We will facilitate the option for students to pair up and share rooms to further minimize expenses as the program date approaches.

  • Your Study Abroad ticket includes the Sexceptional Weekend: Sexuality Around the World with Justin Lehmiller and Expert Guest lecturers. We highly recommend you to attend live online. If you can not, please let us know and plan to watch the recording later as this will be part of your course CEs. We highly encourage all study abroad students to be there. (Zoom links will be sent after you register).

  • There are no pre-requisites required for the course. We welcome all students regardless of profession or courses completed. We often have students from all over the world including but not limited to: Sex nerds or enthusiasts, sex therapists or coaches, sexual health practitioners or educators, researchers, academic professors, medical doctors, certified and non-certified students and more! You do not need to be a SHA student or member to attend! But, we're sure you will be forever a SHA fan at the end of the program! You'll also most likely be Justin's new bff! ;)

  • Yes! Many of our students will attend more than one program. Each program offers different experiences, insights and perspectives. Some will even travel together between cities if the dates line up. Come to one, two or all of them!
