Reykjavik, Iceland STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM: September 15th - 19TH, 2025

WHAT TO EXPECT?

We're taking our popular Study Abroad program to Reykjavik, Iceland for the first time! Why Reykjavik? Because it offers a unique blend of progressive sexuality education and an adventurous, travel-friendly environment. Sexual Health Alliance's Study Abroad program provides a cutting-edge, transformational, and engaging sexuality education experience.

Led by Dr. Justin Lehmiller, a Harvard Award-winning educator, this advanced program offers an immersive experience with educational excursions and cultural insights, all set against the stunning backdrop of Iceland's capital.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Iceland boasts one of the most sexually liberated cultures in the world. It’s also one of the most equitable in terms of gender and LGBTQ+ issues. At the same time, it is one of the smallest countries around. The entire population of Iceland is similar in size to the population of the US city of New Orleans, which means that a big city in this country can often feel like a small town. Global sex surveys find that Icelandic folks tend to start having sex at younger ages, have more partners, and are more likely to have casual sex compared to persons from other cultures. Iceland is also just one of two countries that hosts its own dedicated penis museum.

  • This course offers students the chance to conduct a comparative analysis of sexual attitudes and behaviors between Iceland and the United States. Iceland presents a compelling cultural contrast due to its progressive sexual health outcomes, longstanding sex education policies, and its history of support for LGBTQ+ rights. We will delve deeply into Iceland’s model of sexuality and examine the insights it offers. Students will explore varied sexuality issues within Iceland and engage with Icelandic culture to enrich their cultural sensitivity and global perspective.

  • Course fee is $1597 (plus fees) per student for registration.

    • It includes:
All lectures/workshops with Dr. Justin Lehmiller

    • All events with guest speakers

    • All cultural excursions and adventures

  • Students are responsible for their own transportation, hotel accommodations, and meals during the program. Reykjavik’s public transportation is reliable, allowing students to choose accommodations outside the city center to help manage costs. We will offer the option for students to pair up and share rooms to further reduce expenses as the program date approaches.

It is important for students to book their own flights and hotel accommodations, aiming to arrive in Reykjavik no later than early-afternoon on September 15th, with activities starting at 4:00 PM that day. For departures, students should plan to leave on September 19th or later.

Additionally, you are welcome to extend your stay in Reykjavik before or after the course as desired. We will provide a comprehensive list of optional activities for those interested in exploring more of the city. Please note that all fees are non-refundable, though they can be transferred between SHA students, programs, and events. Some activities may change depending on availability.

  • We will stay in the city center of Reykjavik to be close to most of our activities for the week. We will meet at a central hotel on most days, and many students may also choose to stay at that same hotel. We will provide the hotel details and address soon after you reserve your spot. Please note that you are free to book accommodations anywhere you prefer; the option we provide is merely a suggestion and our meeting point.

As the program date approaches, we will offer the option for students to pair up and share rooms to help reduce costs.

  • Your Study Abroad ticket includes the Sexceptional Weekend: Sexuality Around the World with Justin Lehmiller and Expert Guest lecturers. We highly recommend you to attend live online. If you can not, please let us know and plan to watch the recording later as this will be part of your course CEs. We highly encourage all study abroad students to be there. (Zoom links will be sent after you register).

  • There are no pre-requisites required for the course. We welcome all students regardless of profession or courses completed. We often have students from all over the world including but not limited to: Sex nerds or enthusiasts, sex therapists or coaches, sexual health practitioners or educators, researchers, academic professors, medical doctors, certified and non-certified students and more! You do not need to be a SHA student or member to attend! But, we're sure you will be forever a SHA fan at the end of the program! You'll also most likely be Justin's new bff! ;)

  • Yes! Many of our students will attend more than one program. Each program offers different experiences, insights and perspectives. Some will even travel together between cities if the dates line up. Come to one, two or all of them!
