Dr. Venkatraman Chandra-Mouli | A Global Perspective

Dr. Venkatraman Chandra-Mouli, known as Chandra, was born and raised in India but has spent over 40 years living and working internationally. While maintaining strong ties to India, his perspectives and approach have been shaped by experiences in 75 countries, nearly a decade in Zambia, and three decades in Switzerland. In August 2023, he retired from the World Health Organization after a distinguished 30-year career, 27 of which were dedicated to adolescent health. He continues to contribute to adolescent sexual and reproductive health by collaborating with multiple organizations rather than being affiliated with just one. Chandra remains deeply engaged in learning, communication, advising, teaching, and supporting advocacy, research, and action in the field.

Some of Dr. Venkatraman Chandra-Mouli’s achievements include:

  • Synthesized and disseminated data on the progress made in reducing the rates of child marriage, female genital mutilation, HIV infection and HIV-related mortality, and adolescent pregnancy and childbearing globally.

  • Working with the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and with research teams from countries in nearly 20 countries in WHO’s six regions, conceived and executed the Global Early Adolescent Study, the first global study of gender socialization in adolescents. In addition to generating a huge and growing body of research outputs, the Study has had a huge influence on the field.

  • Responded to the evolving needs of the field of adolescent pregnancy and childbearing, over 25 years. We began by making a case for attention to and investment in this area. We then set out evidence-based guidance on what needed to be done to address this area. We then supported countries in developing national policies and strategies on preventing child marriage and improving access to and uptake of contraception by adolescents.

  • Over 30 years, contributed first to defining adolescent friendly health services, and then – responding to developments in the field – to moving the focus from making individual clinics and centers adolescent friendly to making national health systems responsive to adolescents.

  • Incrementally built a body of work on comprehensive sexuality education, that included building evidence; developing normative tools; advocating for action, building the understanding of decision makers; and their capacity in planning and implementing CSE as part of a multicomponent programme; and supporting countries develop and apply policies and strategies.

Jim Pfaus | Indigenous Concepts

Professor Jim Pfaus, PhD, IF, is a basic and preclinical researcher in the neuroscience and psychology of sexual behavior and neuroendocrine function in the Department of Psychology and Life Sciences and the Sexological Institute at Charles University in Prague, and director of research for the Center for Sexual Health and Interventions at the Czech National Institute of Mental Health.

Originally from the US, he received his bachelors in Psychology in 1983 from The American University in Washington, DC, then his PhD in Neuroscience in 1990 from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, BC Canada. He did a 2-year postdoctoral fellowship in molecular neurobiology in the laboratory of Dr. Donald Pfaff at Rockefeller University in New York City, after which he became a Professor of Neuroscience in the Center for Studies in Behavioral Neurobiology, Department of Psychology, at Concordia University in Montréal, Canada from 1992 to 2018. He left Concordia in 2018 and was a visiting researcher at the Universidad Veracruzana in Xalapa with colleagues in the Instituto de Investigaciones Cerebrales from 2019 to 2021, after which he moved to Prague in the Czech Republic to become a Professor of Neuroscience at Charles University and Research Director at the Center for Sexual Health and Intervention where his laboratory is located.

Jim’s research uses both rats and humans to understand how the brain and its neurochemical and neuroendocrine systems are organized for basic sexual responses like arousal, desire, sexual pleasure and orgasm, and sexual inhibition and disgust. His work has also shed light on the neurochemical, molecular, and epigenetic mechanisms by which conditioned sexual responses potentiate sexual preferences and reproduction, and how they figure in the development of individual preferences, including fetishes and paraphilias.
He has published over 260 peer-reviewed scientific papers and book chapters on the neurobiology of sexual behavior in both females and males, and his work has led to the formulation of new drugs to treat sexual dysfunctions and ways to compensate for psychiatric medications that have debilitating sexual side effects.

He is the Editor-in-Chief of the journal Current Sexual Health Reports, Associate editor of Frontiers in Behavioral Neuroscience, and Sexual Medicine Reviews, and past Associate editor of the Journal of Sexual Medicine, and sits on the editorial boards of other scientific journals in sexuality, neuroscience, and pharmacology.
