Dr. Crystal Dehle and Dr. Marina Rosenthal: An Introduction to Integrative Behavioral Couple Therapy (IBCT) and Its Use in Contemporary Sex Therapy
This workshop is for all professionals including coaches, educators and consultants that work with couples or relational units. Experts in couple therapy and sex therapy have historically operated in largely independent professional arenas, with surprisingly little integration of these two important and intuitively related fields of study and practice. This workshop is designed to help synthesize these areas by providing participants with an initial exposure to the theory and practice of Integrative Behavioral Couple Therapy, as well as opportunities to apply this approach to common presenting issues in sex therapy. IBCT is an evidence-based couple therapy that balances acceptance strategies with targeted change interventions to help couples improve the quality of their intimate relationships. We will cover the theoretical and empirical foundations of IBCT, discuss why it is particularly well-suited as a framework for many contemporary sex therapy interventions, teach skills related to IBCT case formulations (i.e., a DEEP analysis), and introduce the primary acceptance and change interventions utilized by IBCT providers by using case examples with sexuality related themes and issues.
Objectives:
Identify the theoretical assumptions and constructs of IBCT
Describe its utility for sex therapy
Describe the components of a DEEP analysis
Describe the primary acceptance interventions within IBCT
Apply acceptance and change interventions to case examples with sexuality-related issues or difficulties
Identify strategies for addressing complex cases (e.g., IPV, co-occurring severe relational distress and sexual concerns)
Describe the utility of this framework for other sexuality professionals (i.e., educators, consultants)

MEET YOUR PRESENTERS
Crystal Dehle, PhD
Dr. Crystal Dehle (she/hers) is a licensed clinical psychologist who specializes in couple/relational therapy. She earned her PhD in clinical psychology in 1995 at the University of Oregon where she was mentored by Bob Weiss, a pioneer in couples research and a developer of traditional behavioral couple therapy. Early in her career, she was a tenured Associate Professor at Idaho State University (ISU) where she helped develop, launch, and accredit a new PhD program in clinical psychology focused on addressing the need for more psychologists in rural and underserved areas. While at ISU, she conducted, mentored, presented, and published peer-reviewed research on intimate relationships, authored book chapters on intimate relationships, taught undergraduate and graduate courses in couple/family therapy and diversity issues in psychology, trained and supervised doctoral students in couple therapy, and served as the coordinator for the psychology department’s DEI initiatives. In 2005, she returned to the University of Oregon as a faculty member where she taught courses intimate relationships, the psychology of gender, and ethics. In addition, Dr. Dehle trained and supervised doctoral clinical psychology students in both couple therapy and cognitive-behavioral therapy, and served as Clinic Director for the University of Oregon Psychology Clinic, which is the primary training site for the doctoral program.
Dr. Dehle has extensive training in evidence-based interventions for couples, including traditional behavioral couple therapy, cognitive-behavioral couple therapy, and Integrative Behavioral Couple Therapy (and is listed as an approved IBCT provider by the developers of the approach). She recently retired from her full-time academic position at the University of Oregon to open a private practice in Eugene, Oregon focusing on relational and couple services. She is queer, poly, and kink identified and brings an intersectional lens to her evidence-based clinical work with clients. She is particularly interested in affirming relational work with members of GSRD communities (Gender, Sexual, and Relationship Diversity). As a recent graduate of SHA’s Sex Therapist Certification Program, she is integrating sex therapy into her clinical work with couples and relationships, and is currently completing AASECT sex therapy supervision hours.
Marina Rosenthal, PhD
Dr. Marina Rosenthal (she/her) is a licensed clinical psychologist who specializes in couple and relational therapy. In her private practice in Minneapolis, Minnesota, she concentrates on serving high conflict couples who have destructive conflict patterns, multiple and complex concerns, and prior failure in couple therapy. In her work, Dr. Rosenthal emphasizes the importance of context, allowing partners to define their own version of healthy and happy without focusing on prescriptive rules about what relationships should look like. She has cultivated particular expertise in determining which couples can safely engage in treatment, despite the presence of some violence or aggression in their relationship, ensuring that those who engage in therapy can benefit without risk of further escalation. Dr. Rosenthal greatly enjoys working with partners on sexual concerns including infidelity, desire discrepancy, out of control sexual behavior, and non-monogamy exploration. She is extensively trained in Integrative Behavioral Couple Therapy (IBCT) and is listed as an approved IBCT provider by the developers of the approach. She is also a current Sexual Health Alliance Sex Therapy Certification student and is completing AASECT sex therapy supervision hours.
Outside of her private practice, Dr. Rosenthal is also an assistant professor at Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota where she teaches psychology doctoral students. Her teaching areas include sex therapy, trauma therapy, and cognitive behavioral therapy. She also supervises student research on a wide variety of topics and is active in the scientific community, serving as an Editorial Board member on the Journal of Trauma and Dissociation. She has published numerous peer-reviewed articles on topics including sexual communication, sexual harassment, trauma symptoms, and college sexual violence.
