SHA’s Copenhagen Study Abroad program offers an immersive learning experience for professionals, students, and educators in sexual health, therapy, coaching, and sexology. This program combines experiential excursions, expert-led sessions, and cultural immersion to expand your global perspective and professional expertise.

WHAT TO EXPECT?

Copenhagen is a hub of sexual wellness, education, and progressive policy. Participants will explore the intersection of sexuality, culture, and social policy, visiting sites that highlight inclusive education, gender equality, and modern relationship practices. Through guided tours, interactive workshops, and group discussions, attendees will gain hands-on knowledge and cross-cultural insights they can apply to their work in sexual health.

Note: The “partner(s) ticket” is an add on ticket for your partner(s) that includes the daily cultural events and excursions, welcome dinner, Swag/shirt and other activities. It does not include the smaller behind the scenes tours or guest lectures. All of these activities are also already included in the overall course fees for the student participant.

Note: Please plan to arrive in Copenhagen no later than the morning of Sept 27th with activities commencing at 4:00 PM on Sept. 27th starting. Students should plan to leave October 2nd or later. The group typically uses the last day (October 1st) to meet colleagues in the area, visit a park, a club or anything else they have had their eye on throughout the program.

Study Abroad Justin Lehmiller

Dr. Justin Lehmiller

Dr. Justin Lehmiller received his Ph.D. in Social Psychology from Purdue University. Dr. Lehmiller also is Director of the Study Abroad Program with the Sexual Health Alliance. He is a Research Fellow at The Kinsey Institute and author of the book Tell Me What You Want: The Science of Sexual Desire and How It Can Help You Improve Your Sex Life. Dr. Lehmiller is an award-winning educator, having been honored three times with the Certificate of Teaching Excellence from Harvard University, where he taught for several years.

He is also a prolific researcher and scholar who has published more than 50 academic works to date, including a textbook titled The Psychology of Human Sexuality (third edition released in 2023) that is used in college classrooms around the world.

Dr. Lehmiller’s research focuses on topics including casual sex, sexual fantasy, sexual health, and friends with benefits. His studies have appeared in all of the leading journals on human sexuality, including the Journal of Sex Research, Archives of Sexual Behavior, and The Journal of Sexual Medicine.


SHA Frequently Asked Questions
  • This course offers students the opportunity to perform a comparative analysis of sexual attitudes and behaviors in Copenhagen and the United States. Students will also learn about cultural issues and have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the culture to enhance their cultural sensitivity and global perspective.

  • Students are responsible for their own transportation, hotel accommodations, and meals. We will choose the best hotel and location for the activities planned at a moderate budget and you can choose to stay there or anywhere else you desire.

    Book your flights and hotel to arrive in Copenhagen no later than the morning of Sept 27th with activities commencing at 4:00 PM on Sept. 27th. Students should plan to leave October 2nd or later. The group typically uses the last day (October 1st) to meet colleagues in the area, visit a park, a club or anything else they have had their eye on throughout the program.

    Feel free to extend your stay; we’ll provide a list of optional activities to explore the city. Oct. 2nd-4th is the Nordic Clinical Sexology Annual Conference in Copenhagen that a few students will also attend.

  • Your Study Abroad ticket includes the Sexceptional Weekend: Global Love with Dr. Justin Lehmiller and Expert Guest lecturers. We highly recommend you to attend live online. If you can not, please let us know and plan to watch the recording later as this will be part of your course CEs. We encourage all study abroad students to be there. (Zoom links will be sent after you register).

  • There are no pre-requisites required for the course. We welcome all students as well as non-traditional students regardless of profession or courses completed. We often have students from all over the world including but not limited to: Sex nerds or enthusiasts, sex therapists or coaches, sexual health practitioners or educators, researchers, academic professors, medical doctors, certified and non-certified students and more! You do not need to be a SHA student or member to attend! But, we're sure you will be forever a SHA fan at the end of the program! You'll also most likely be Justin's new bff! ;)

  • Yes! Many of our students will attend more than one program. Each program offers different experiences, insights and perspectives. Some will even travel together between cities if the dates line up. Come to all of them!
