Sexual Health Alliance four day study abroad program in Berlin will be cutting edge, transformational and exceed your expectations of studying human sexuality in a different culture and country. If you’ve seen Dr. Justin Lehmiller before at our Sexceptional Weekends in person or online, you know this will be an incredible week learning from a Harvard Award Winning Educator and professor and his stellar guest speakers. This is an advanced program that includes elements of immersion, experiential and educational excursions.

Dr. Justin Lehmiller is a Research Fellow at The Kinsey Institute, founder of the blog Sex and Psychology, and author of the bestselling book Tell Me What You Want: The Science of Sexual Desire and How It Can Help You Improve Your Sex Life. He has over a decade of experience teaching sexuality courses in prestigious colleges and universities and has led 10+ Sexceptional Weekend Conferences for the Sexual Health Alliance, as well as our 2021 Study Abroad Program in the Netherlands and 2023 Study Abroad in Berlin, Germany.

This course offers students the opportunity to perform a comparative analysis of sexual attitudes and behaviors in Germany and the United States. Germany provides an important contrast in many ways. For example, in the U.S., there is no federal requirement for sex education; however, sex ed has been mandatory in every German school since 1992. With a teen pregnancy rate three times lower than that of the U.S., the German approach appears to be working! Germany is also home to the first gay rights organization (established in 1897), the first “Institute for Sexual Science” in the world (1919-1933), and some of the most well-known kink establishments in the world. Germany also has a legal and government regulated system for sex work. We will explore the German model of sexuality in depth and the rich history of sex research in the country. Students will also have the opportunity to immerse themselves in German culture in order to enhance their cultural sensitivity and global perspective.

Students are responsible for transportation, hotel accommodation and all meals:

Berlin has great public transportation so students may choose to stay a little further out in order to save money. We will also offer students the option of pairing up with other students to share rooms and save on hotel costs as the program gets closer.

Students will be responsible for booking their own flight and hotel accommodations. When booking flights/hotels, plan to be in Berlin no later than mid-afternoon on May 12th. Activities will begin at 5:00 PM that day. For departure, plan to leave May 17th or later. That said, feel free to extend your stay in Berlin before or after the course if you desire. We will provide an extensive list of optional activity suggestions should you wish to explore more of Berlin. All fees are non-refundable, but are transferable between SHA students, programs and events. Some of the activities may be subject to change based on availability.
