Highlights from SHA’s Conference Weekend: Rethinking Sex Addiction: Out of Control Sexual Behavior Assessment and Treatment

Sexual Health Alliance had an excellent and engaging weekend conference with experts Michael Vigorito, Dr. Wendy Miller, and Dr. Joshua Grubbs. Our students learned about reframing the term “sex addiction”, how to assess individuals for out-of-control sexual behaviors, and the treatment modalities available to best assist future clients. 

Out of Control Sexual Behavior Assessment and Treatment, Day 1: May 13th, 2023

Weekend training with Sexual Health Alliance is anything but ordinary. We find the best of the best to share their knowledge with you. This weekend’s conference was no exception, and we were proud to host international expert Michael Vigorito to teach about Out of Control Sexual Behavior. 

Michael Vigorito is a sex therapist, author, and trainer. In his practice, he provides individual, couples, and group therapy for a range of sexual and behavioral health concerns including problematic and out-of-control sexual behavior, sexual disorders, and sex-drug-linked behaviors. Michael is also one of the expert facilitators of SHA’s Problem Sexual Behavior Certification program. 

Day one consisted of engaging lectures and Q&As with Michael Viforito. He started the day by reviewing sexual dysregulation concepts, pathology-based models, and symptoms of pre-existing psychiatric conditions. Michael elaborated on these topics and covered the concepts of:

  • Moral incongruence

  • Psychosexual problem

  • Out of control sexual behavior Definition

  • Conceptualization

In addition to fascinating lectures, the morning contained a hands-on assessment activity. To complement Michael’s morning sessions, Dr. Wendy Miller and Dr. Joshua Grubbs held extraordinary OCSB sessions for us in the afternoon. 

Dr. Wendy Miller is a clinical psychologist with 35 years of experience treating individuals and couples. She has trained extensively in Emotionally Focused Couples therapy and sex therapy and is an AASECT Certified Sex Therapist. She currently runs an ongoing Men’s Sexual Health Group that focuses on men struggling with out-of-control sexual behavior. Dr. Wendy Miller’s training focused on out-of-control sexual behaviors and couples. Her thought-provoking training focused on the following topics:

  • Differences in doing couples therapy from the sex addiction model and the OCSB model.

  • Reasons that an individual may engage in an infidelity that does not have to do with unhappiness in their marriage, and couples therapy after an infidelity.

Joshua Grubbs is an associate professor in the clinical psychology Ph.D. program at Bowling Green State University. Dr. Grubbs’s research program generally focuses on behavioral addictions and the social context of addiction. Dr. Joshua Grubbs took us on an educational journey through:

  • Moral incongruence, narcissism, and problematic sexual behaviors

Out of Control Sexual Behavior Assessment and Treatment, Day 2: May 14th, 2023

Day two of our OCSB Sexceptional Weekend involved more inspiring lectures and group activities. The highlight of day two was the group demonstration led by Michael Vigorito. Conference attendees were able to observe a real-time therapy group led by Michael Vigorito. The group consisted of incredible volunteers from our attendee group. Thank you to everyone who participated and shared their vulnerability and life experiences with the group. It was a great experience to see Michael lead the group with expertise and compassion. 

The weekend was a whirlwind of progressive thought and inspiring dialogue. Sexual Health Alliance has the privilege of hosting the best presenters and most incredible students. We can’t wait to share our next event with you!
