With one fell swoop, a child’s gender identity, orientation, life experience, sexual behaviors, and social interactions have been painted upon them… but we are more complex than that. In this class we will examine homosocial behavior, transgender issues, heterosexuality, chromosomes beyond XX/XY, and the cultures that affect our assumptions. From gender roles to prison sex, linguistic colonization to slut shaming, let’s look at humanity through a broader lens! Buckle up for a wild ride through the diversity of the human experience.

Saturday Sexceptional Lecture April 26th, 1pm - 5pm: Beyond Pronouns: Tools for Allyship of Transgender and Gender Diverse Individuals

(includes recorded interviews of community members and a specialized lecture)

You remember to call someone by the pronoun and name they use – good enough, right? So many people who want to ally themselves to transgender and gender diverse individuals are not aware of the wide array of ways they can help make life easier for them! Through a panel discussion, presentation, group discussions, and resource sharing, this course is a chance for people who want to build skills for allyship to learn to do so, without continuing seemingly positive things that may accidentally be causing harm. Professionals, friends, partners, and individuals of all sorts that are or want to be allies are encouraged to attend. Transgender and gender diverse individuals attending can learn how to support each other further, and build tools for helping others help them as well – including empowering their allies to do the work so that the trans people don’t have to keep doing the heavy lifting. This is about more than pronouns. This is about culture shifting at every level of society while also supporting people one on one. Let’s all work together to make this a better world for everyone.

DR. DAVID LEY

Consensual NonMonogamy is the fastest growing relationship trend of the new millennium. Young people are embracing relationships that reject socially-mandated monogamy. Older generations which have lived nonmonogamously for decades are coming out of the closet about their lives and loves. The options are many and varied. Success in these new relationship styles requires self-awareness and personal skills. But how do you know which relationship style you’re best suited for? Which flavor of love and sex will best fit your palate, and work for your relationship? Dr. David Ley is an internationally-recognized expert on sexuality, and particularly on translating modern sexuality in a non-shaming way. In this novel, never-before-presented discussion, he explores how people can successfully and healthily navigate the growing ranges of relationship options.

Orgy Story - Live Podcast at our weekend conference on day 2!

Orgy Story! A narrative podcast about hosting, attending, and destigmatizing Orgies. You can expect way too graphic of details, interviews with experts, and first person narratives about the crazy world of group sex. We're Vicki, Hannah, and Kevin, and we've attended a lot of orgies (for professional reasons obviously).

“31 FLAVORS OF NON MONOGAMY w/ Dr. David Ley"

Join us as we discuss the ways in which personal characteristics, relationship characteristics, political and moral values, all lead us to "choose" one flavor or the other.

Confronting Monogamy Ideals Embedded in Psychotherapy: Some research has found that as many as 70% of licensed therapists view nonmonogamy as “unworkable” or “unrealistic.” Modern attachment theorists view Consensual Nonmonogamy (CNM) as emerging from deficient or disturbed relationships and early childhood experiences. However, CNM is becoming far more common, and unprepared therapists are encountering it in therapy far more frequently. This training helps therapists to examine their own biases about relationship, love and sex, and explores ways to address CNM in a non-judgmental, non-shaming manner.

  • Participants will learn to confront and challenge their own unexamined biases about relationship styles and sexuality;

  • Participants will gain skills to be able to understand and assist different types of CNM relationships;

  • Participants will learn to help individuals and couples gain self-awareness into the personal and relational characteristics which predict disposition to different types of CNM and success therein

CNM Case Presentations: Group will explore a variety of different case presentations, offered by the presenter, and by group participants. Participants will discuss assessment, treatment and intervention techniques appropriate to different types of CNM and different couples, based on the individual and relational characteristics. Group will discuss: Swinger couples; Cuckold couples; Polyamorous couples; Polyamorous Triads/Groups; Solo Polyamorists; DADT/Open couples; other. (2 hours)

  • Participants will gain exposure to different types of CNM therapy cases;

  • Participants will develop case presentation and treatment formulation skills;

  • Group will explore and share varied intervention and therapy techniques

American Psychological Association Division 44 Consensual Non-monogamy Task Force: Q & A (1-2pm)

Q&A panel: Dr. Amy Moors and Dr. Heath Schechinger research and clinical practice focused on consensual non-monogamies Affiliation: Dr. Amy Moors, Assitant Professor of Psychology, Chapman University and Research Fellow, The Kinsey Institute, Indiana University; Dr. Heath Schechinger, Licensed Psychologist, University of California Berkeley.

Schechinger.JPG

Over the past ten years, Dr. Moors and Dr. Schechinger have focused their research and clinical practice on consensually non-monogamous relationships, including understanding prevalence and desire, helpful and harmful therapy practices, and attachment and personality correlates of engagement. Together, they co-chair the American Psychological Association Division 44 Consensual Non-monogamy Task Force, which focuses on psychological research, practice, and education related to diverse expressions of sexuality and consensual non-monogamies. We are excited to have these experts with us as they are in town for SSSS.

We’ve planned this weekend during SSSS (The Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality) annual conference so that we can give everyone a chance to also meet and greet with some sexuality scientists! http://sexscience.org/ssss-event/2019-ssss-annual-meeting/#

Join us on APRIL 6-7th (up to 16 CEs) to learn about Rebel Love and Sex Outside the Lines including ways to enhance pleasure, tolerate more intimacy, heal simple sexual trauma, and reduce body and sex shame. Most sex therapies keep us trapped in our heads and never help get us fully into our body or sexuality. Great sex and full intimacy is about letting go, surrendering to our whole body, and staying out of our heads. The problem with standard “mindfulness” is it’s disembodied, and it keeps you in your head, because it's not a true body based practice.  Disembodied people doing mindfulness stay disembodied. Thus far mindfulness applied to sex doesn’t address or undue (sexual or body) shame or simple trauma either.

THIS TRAINING CAN HELP PEOPLE GAIN:

1. A better understanding of the sexual body, 2. Improved sexual and body communication skills, 3. Use of sex as a tool to connect, 4. Learning about your authentic sexual self, 5. Sexual and body confidence, 6. Removal of sexual anxieties, 7. Increased sexual pleasure, 8. Increased tolerance for intimacy.

  • Break down the limiting cultural and psychological structures to create a more expansive and inclusive view of sexual-relational health

  • Demonstrate how "normal" is oppressive and shaming

  • Challenge current sexual diagnoses and disorders as flawed, pathologizing, and heteronormative

  • Provide a new vision for sexual-relational health

Are you getting what you want when it comes to sex? Odds are, probably not. Most of us have sexual fantasies that we wish were part of our sexual reality; however, few of us have shared these desires with our partners, let alone acted on them, because fear, shame, and embarrassment are holding us back.

We need to move past sexual shame and learn to communicate our desires in order to establish happy and healthy relationships. Sexual communication has a number of benefits, from establishing greater intimacy and closeness to keeping passion alive for the long haul.
