AASECT CERTIFICATION PROGRAMS ONLINE

WHAT IS AASECT?

The American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists, or AASECT, is the leading, national association for sexuality professionals. AASECT is devoted to the promotion of accurate, up-to-date, and celebratory sexual health through the development and advancement of the fields of sexual therapy, counseling, and education. AASECT’s mission is to continue pushing for better sexual health information and provide proper certification for professionals working in the sex and sexuality field.

WHY IS AASECT IMPORTANT?

Put simply, and in their own words, AASECT “affirms the fundamental value of sexuality as an inherent, essential, and beneficial dimension of being human.” It’s mission it to advance the standards of professional practice for all educators, counselors, and therapists. From its conception in 1967, AASECT has worked to set the standard for all professional practices, whether that be educators, counselors, or therapists. As a nationwide organzation, AASECT proudly opposes all forces that attempt to interfere with fundamental sexual health and sexual freedom, such as social, cultural, legislative, and governmental, and all abuses of sexuality, such as harrassment, prejudice, or violation on one’s sexual and civil rights.

DOES AASECT OFFER ITS OWN CERTIFICATE PROGRAMS?

No, AASECT does not offer its own certificate programs. Instead, they recognize various third-party organizations, such as the Sexual Health Alliance, to provide the required training for further certification. AASECT does host different events throughout the year that one can attend and receive CEs (credit hours).

AASECT REQUIREMENTS OF ONLINE CERTIFICATE PROGRAMS

As one could expect, the requirements of AASECT-approved CE providers are extensive. All CE providers, regardless of the number of students, must have an AASECT Certified Member on the planning committee for all events. The main requirements for all AASECT CE providers are:

  1. Must have an AASECT Certified Member on event planning committee who assumes full responsibility for the event

  2. Events will be evaluated by AASECT’s CE Approval Committee for an understanding of AASECT’s educational standards and procedures every two years

  3. CE Providers must accurately and properly represent all AASECT ethics, guidelines, vision and mission

  4. All CE Providers must maintain documation of programs offered (think the program’s objectives, any syllabi or assignments, and evaluations) for sevn years as aligns with the AASECT Code of Conduct

SHA + AASECT

The Sexual Health Alliance is proud to be one of the very few AASECT-approved Certificate Programs. SHA is considered an Organizational Provider II, which means we can offer more than 40 AASECT CE credits per year and uses more than one expert to deliver training. Since SHA’s conception in 2015, we have provided over 80 AASECT-approved conferences and now offer seven different certification programs that allow students to receive AASECT CEs. Because of our rigorous conference schedule, we’re one of the few approved certificate programs that offer as many CEs as we do!
